Camping at Cockatoo Lake

This was our only free weekend between now and probably February so we decided to try our luck yabbying at Cockatoo Lake.  The weather forecast was for a hot day but with thunderstorms later in the day.  I said, the yabbies should be crawling with weather like that...

When we got there, the main camp ground was fairly full of people.  People with noisy speed boats and jet skis...

We found a nice spot around the other side of the lake, where only a few other campers and day trippers were.  We had Pearl set up in half an hour, bed made, awnings up etc.  Now it was time to set up our new toy...an inflatable dingy which we have nicknamed Bob!

It is inflated using a compressor and finished off with a hand pump to achieve the correct air pressure...it was hard, hot work for Gus...

Finally, Bob looked very handsome!  Gus still needs to get his boat licence before we can have a small outboard motor on the back...

This pic shows the main camp ground across the lake...

Our bank was more peaceful...

There’s Ruby and Pearl.  You may wonder about camping under those gum trees but they were not hanging over us at all.

We launched Bob and set about dropping the yabby nets out in the lake.  Those two floats near the trees are where our nets are....they’re pieces of pool noodle that Gus used for floats.

After an hour or so, we took to the water again and this was our first yield! Yay! We’ll be eating yabbies for dinner!

That thundery weather was starting to roll in...

Hmmm, that does not look good!  We went out once more to pull the pots and got some more.  Happy!

We cooked the yabbies in boiling water then let them drain...

...then I picked them.

I made a simple dish of yabbies tossed with lemon juice, parsley, olive oil, butter, salt and pepper and parmesan cheese with linguini.  It was bloody good!
